The Legend of Moon Mountain
THE LEGEND OF MOON MOUNTAIN is a fable based on the Ancient Egyptians' tradition that their ancestors came from Ruwenzori (Moon Mountian) in East Africa. The oral history that claims Ta Merian (Egyptian) origin on Ruwenzori does not give a specific motive for the ancestors' having come to the Nile Valley. The author gives as a motive, Shani and her party's desire to travel to the land beyond all villages to gain ultimate wisdom from the ancestors believed to reside there.

Because the first Deity to have been universally adored was Isis, the author has chosen to make the chief explorer in the search for ancestral wisdom, female. Shani's party consists of herself and Unyofu; Rubani-Zeruzeru (An albino girl) and Meli and Taka and Ajani, ajani is Shani's brother. Each of these pairs eventually marries. They become the progenitors of those who settle the Nile Valley. The journey to the land, thought to be, where the ancestors dwell takes several generations.

The story begins on a sunny day when teenage Shani approaches her Chief to ask if there is a reason why it is forbidden to travel beyond all villages to the land of the ancestors. When the Chief can give no reason not to make such a pilgrimage, Shani and her companions begin building a boat that can take them on that journey. They could now reveal that they had secretly discussed the exploration before they were given permission to do so..

In due course the descendants of Shani and her companions learn the truth of where the ancestors dwell.
